BLOWN TO PIECES.
Deliberate Explosion at Relief Works Depot. SHOCK NEAR SYDNEY. (Keceivcd 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. A terrific explosion; which the police believe was deliberately set off, occurred early this morning when a large quantity of gelignite and detonators exploded in the unemployed relief works depot at Bexley, a suburb of Sydney. The depot was blown to pieces. Sheets of iron and tools were hurled hundreds of yards, windows of neighbouring houses were shattered, ceilings fell in and shops windows collapsed. Residents of the locality were terrified. Some people who were sleeping in their beds were shaken violently as if by an earthquake. Electric light wires were severed by flying iron, plunging the district into darkness. The effect of the explosion was felt 14 miles away.
