LYNNDALE AMATEURS. FIXTURES. Saturday, July 21. —Teams Race and Junior Championship. Saturday, July 25.—13-Mile Senior. Sunny, fine weather favoured the Lynndale Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club last Saturday, when they held their annual invitation race with the Takapuna (Jlub on their circuit at New Lynn. Easily the biggest club entry of 21 started in the two-lap race of O'A miles for the juniors, and a fast keen race was witnessed. P. Lupton, oil the limit of 4.30, still led over the first lap from his co-marker, H. Hawke, closely followed by the ultimate winner, G. Helliwell. Then came Brian Carbury, G. Baldwin and G. Stewart, with the back-markers rapidly bunching; for the scratch men, Boss Jones, of Takapuna, and G. Holton, to cross the line two minutes after the leaders, and Boss Jones to break the junior lap record, Robertson and Hutton, the other scratch riders, iiad been dropped at this stage. Over the last lap many changes took place. Gordon Helliwell came through very fast over the last bit to secure a well-merited win from Geo. Baldwin, with Preddy Lupton close up thirdIn the scratch bunch Harry Robertson had caught Holton, who had slowed up considerably after Ross Jones had crashed, and Robertson beat Holton by a clean length to gain fastest time. Gordon Helliwell (2.20) deserved his win, for he rode a well-judged This is his second win this season. George ! Baldwin (2.30) was second. This was his second race; lie was third last week, but with experience will improve tremendously. Preddy Lupton (4.30) rode well, and was a little unlucky to be beaten so close from the finish. If he keeps up his present form he should be in a place soon. Brian Carbury, for his first ride, did well to finish fourth. Nine juniors have nominated for the junior championship to be held on Saturday, being Hansen, Holton, Robertson, Carr, Helliwell, Crisp, Macen, Carbury, Baldwin. All these riders mu9t wear club colours, red and black. There were many retirements in the seven-lap senior race of 22%. miles, and the race was anybody's up till the last lap. B. Munn led for the first lap from Chaplin, Caddy, Evans and Willis, while the scratch men, Gooder and Hughes, had dropped their co-marker, to reduce the lap record to 9.40. Chaplin had taken the lead and led for three laps, when no punctured. Willis was now in the lead and going well, meeting the misfortune to puncture in the sixth lap. Caddy and Cummings were riding very well at this stage, as were Hankin, Helliwell and 1. Smith. The scratch pair had caught Scott and were going through fast. With Willis out Hankin took the lead, and passed 16s ahead of the scratch men for the last lap. However, they clamped on the pace over the last, to gain 2!te on the scratch pair, who were a very tired lot. Hankin proved too strong in the sprint with Helliwell for first place- There was a great tussle when Gooder, Hughes and Parker came in for third place, for the former to gain it and fastest time by a very narrow margin. Ken. Hankin's (2.30) TO TO ▼«? popular, for it was pleasing to see this rider get there at last, as it is his first win on the road, although he was prominent in second places last year. Norm. Helliwell (2.30) rules very consistentlv, and is nearly always irp in a Place. Although beaten in the sprint he rode a solid race, and thoroughly deserved hs Co , lin C Gooder (scr.) is steadily getting back to form, and proved he is still a force to be reckoned with m a sprint. A word of praise must be given to Graham Hughes, who waited for hie comarker, when the latter was brought down with several others going up the concrete, while Pat Smith, who crashed early m the race/continued, and rode a solid unpaced race. He would certainly have been in a place if he had not crashed. P The sole selector, Mr P. Roberta, has nominated Gooder, Hughes, Scott, Smith, H°inkin, Helliwell, Carr and Alderson to represent the club on Saturday All Sta are to wear red and black, and be"ready to start at 2 p.m. sharp.
