WAITEMATA COUNTY.

LARGER RATE COLLECTION. SEVERAL NEW BRIDGES. The monthly meeting of the Waitcmata County Coimcil was held this morning, the chairman, Mr. W. A. Bishop, presiding. Rate Collection.—The treasurer reported that the rates collected last month amounted to £1030, as compared with £853 in June, 1033. Unemployment Relief—A report prepared by the engineer showed that the total number of men employed on relief works in the various ridings was 041. Of that number 806 were employed on roads and 45 on farms.

New Bridges.—The engineer reported that detailed plans of the Makarau Bridge had been approved locally and bad boon sent to Wellington for final approval. When that was received tenders could be called for the construction of thq bridge. Plans for the Albany Bridge bad been finalised and would be forwarded for approval at the end of the month. The preparation of plans for the Punganui Bridge was proceeding satisfactorily and the foundations had been found to bo more satisfactory than was anticipated. The contractor for the Waitangi Bridge bad been held, up by the weather. Concerning the Woodhill Bridge, the engineer stated that the work was proceeding satisfactorily and that it was hoped the work would be completed within six weeks. Plans for the reconstruction of the Riverhead Bridge were proceeding satisfactorily. Surveys were to be put in hand during the present month for the reconstruction of the Huia and Kokomatu Bridges. Wairau Creek.—The engineer etated that he had approached the Takapuna Borough Council with a view to formulating a proposal for the clearing of the Wairau Creek, and it had been decided to put in hand a survey of the area to bring down a comprehensive scheme. Titirangi Seawall. —It was reported that good progress was being made with the building pi the Titirangi Bay retaining wall with unemployed relief labour, and that an excellent job was being made of the structure. Cartage Contracts.—Fresh tenders are to be called for the cartage of metal supplies in the whole county. The engineer said that while he was of the opinion that the prices received would not bo lower than those at present obtaining, the council had had numerous inquiries from ratepayers and others who were anxious to tender. He proposed to call tenders for each riding and also for each quarry, so that contractors in a small way of business would have a chance to compete with the big firms. Protection of Women.—After hearing a deputation, the council decided to make a donation of £10 10/ to the funds of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children. It was stated by the deputation that without financial assistance the society would bo unable to carry on.
