SHIP DESERTION.

TWO MEN "MISS" lONIC. SENTENCE OF IMPRISONMENT. The recent trouble which occurred with the stokehold crew of the liner lonic was recalled to-day, when two men, John Janet Phillips, aged 27, and Frederick Walter Beech (27), were each charged with deserting the ship. Phillips said it was not his fault that he missed his ship, which he said he "lost."

Beech explained that his wife and child were living in New Zealand, and that he did not want to return to the lonic.

Phillips was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment and Beech to seven days'.
