TAKAPUNA CLUB.
The event here last Saturday was a seven-lap (26 miles) race for the Hawes Cup and was held over the lake circuit. Owing to the bitterly cold wind-and rain which swept the exposed course, times were necessarily much slower than usual, but * some first-class performances were registered, the most outstanding being those of S. Laurence and G. Williams.
S. Laurence and A. Parker, off 2.30 and 2.15 respectively, were soon together and gave a demonstration of great team work, both boys riding with clock-like precision. Parker, however, punctured in the fifth lap, leaving the leading bunch, L. Denning (6.0), A. Sligo (6.30) and G. Evans (6.0), with a big break on Laurence, who, at this stage, had an almost Herculean task-ahead of him. The sixth lap found him overhauling the leaders, but still with a long way to go. Halfway round in the seventh lap Laurence caught and left the bunch, and, still going strong, headed for the finish to claim first place by the length of the straight, from L. Denning, whose time was 82.21. The third man home was A. Sligo, in 83.22.
G. Williams and V. Blomfield, the scratch men, paced together all the way. Coming into the straight, however, the former drew away to defeat his co-marker fo* fourth place and fastest time by 6s, his time being 77.21. Williams is at the peak of his form and rides an extremely hard race. Gordon's long spell has lost him nothing and he could give a good account of himself in any company at the present time.
S. Laurence gained his placing by staging one of the most brilliant performances ever witnessed here. This victory has been due for quite a while, and as this pedaller is probably one of the fittest men in the club, more should come his way in the near future.
L. Denning, who is a junior rider, is always solid and does _ very consistent work in senior classes, in company with A. Sligo and Geo. Evans, both of whom show u decided improvement. He held
the. lead for six and a half laps; all three men made steady time and did very creditable work.
D. Keating, practically unpaced, plugged away through the seven laps, proving that what he lacked in form was far outweighed by a keen determination not to be a quitter under extremely adverse conditions.
There will be no races held at' Takapuna until the 28th. Next Saturday a number* of the Shore riders will compete in the centre event, and on the 14th the Takapuna Club will race by. invitation with the Lynndale Club on the latter's course. On July 21 the team to represent this club will be competing in the teams race in Auckland, with 11. Jones and L. Denning both riding in the junior championship to be held the same day.
LYNNDALE AMATEURS.
FIXTURES. Saturday, July 7.—Centre Races. Saturday, July 14.—Invitation Race, Takapuna.
Conditions were very severe for cyclists last Saturday. The bitterly cold showers and heavy winds were adverse to the competitors who braved the elements. The Lynndale Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club conducted two open races, a G l /4-mile junior and a' 22%-mile senior, over its circuit at New Lynn. The heavy rain had made parts of the course loose -and skiddy, causing several riders to tip out.
The juniors were out in force and Billy Williams, off 2.0, is still improving strongly to collect his second win. His time of 23.32 was highly creditable for the condition's. G. Crisp (2.15) has been knocking at the door for a long time. He evidently finds his new machine more suitable, his second place in 23.50 showing much improvement- Geo. Baldwin (3.0), for his- first ride, did very well to gain third place in 24.48, and gives every indication of becoming a strong rider. Les. Walton (scr), of the Auckland Club, rode a very good race to out-sprint Geo. Holton, his co-marker, for fastest time in 22.7.
The senior race of seven laps was a very gruelling ride, the place-getters thoroughly earning their trophy. Stan Alderson is certainly a surprise packet, to come to light with his third win out of four rides. A blowout of his tyre a few minutes before the start, caused him to start on a strange machine which made his win ali the more meritorious. Colin Gooder was unlucky to crash in the fourth lap when going well for time.
On Sunday members of the Lynndale Club will play the Manukau Club a friendly game of football. With the "ashes" at stake, a keen game is expected. All members will meet at the Lynndale grounds at 9.45 a.m. The following Saturday will see the return invitation race held with the Takapuna Club. The possible selection for" t»j ; representatives for the teams race will probably come from Gooder, Hughes, Scott, Helliwell, Smith, Campbell, Hankin and Alderson.
