SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

To celebrate the coming of age of her daughter Mary, Mrs. E. Beck, of Devonport, gave a dinner party at the Station Hotel on Saturday night, followed by a party at a cabaret. Mrs. Beck received her guests in a frock of black and gold marocain, and Miss Mary Beck wore a frock of blue flat crepe with black accessories. Those present were: Misses Bettie Brambley, Nancy Watson, Gwen McNaughton, Bona Kelly, Betty Ryan and Iwa Pearson. Mrs. Bell Starkey, of Pierce Road, Milford, was the guest of honour at a dance oiven by Mr. and Mrs. Reid, Chamberlain Avenue, Mount Eden, on Saturday evening. Mrs. Reid, who wore a navy georgette frock with floral coatee, received hfer guests, assisted by Miss Kathleen Reid, in orchid satin with parma violet velvet corsage. The ballroom was tastefully decorated in soft tints of blue and gold, and tlie supper room in pink. Those present included: Mesdames Starkey, Horrie Taylor, Ted Boyd, R. Shepherd, A. Gavin, Needham, Misses F. Barker, M. Needham, M. Green, V. Downie, N. Ingles, Bird, Cant. After supper the guest of honour was asked to accept, on behalf of the Ethiopian troupe of entertainers (oi which she is a member) and other-i present, a large basket of articles for the kitchen. During the evening an exhibition of the Spanish tango was given by Miss Kath Reid and Mr. Geo. Brewer.

Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Fogerty were host and hostess at an enjoyable dance held at the Mount Eden tea kiosk on Saturday evening, in honour of the coming-of-age of their daughter Jeanne. The room was tastefully decorated in pink and white, the eupper table decorations being pink heath and paper white narcissi. Mrs. Fogerty received her guests attired in a frock of mulberry windswept velvet and gold lame, and Miss Jeanne Fogerty, guest of the evening, wore ivory suede matalasse, with scarlet corsage. Among the guests were: Misses Marjorie Rapson, Joyce Smith, Peggy Munro, Roma Drake. Bebe Cooke, Esme Burcher, Shirley Law, Frances Gibson, Lynda Hemus, Betty Fulton, Jean Rudd, No!a Rudd, Helen Gray, Ailsa McGill, Marie Jagusche, Marjorie Slade, Irma Hill, Marjorie Grant, Marjorie Pybus, Pearl Walker.

The annual presentation dance of the Papatoetoe Athletic and Cycle Club was held in the Papatoetoe Town Hall last Thursday evening. The hall was tastefully decorated with streamers and greenery, and was crowded with some three hundred dancers. The club trophies, which were competed for during the last season, were presented by Mr. W. J. Nicholson, chairman of the Town Board. An enjoyable programme, comprising old-time, modern and novelty dances, was in the hands of Mr. B. Hounslow. Those present included:— Mesdames R. McLeod, W. J. Nicholson, J. Franklin. J. Knight, W. Symondsville Studio was the scene of a very enjoyable dance recently,, given by Mr. and Mrs. W. Alexander, of Grand View Road, Remuera, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their only son, William. The guests were received by the hostess in a frock of cherry georgette and lace, assisted by her two daughters, Jean and Mollie. During the evening an exhibition dance given by Mr. Matthew and Miss Natalie Stratton was much appreciated. A song by Mr. Jack Cameron and a recitation by Mr. Hunter McNicoll added to the pleasure of the evening. Amongst those present were: Mesdames P. D. Wright, Taylor, Stichbury, Marr, Neale, R. Neale, Alexander, Blomfield, Allkins, Misses English, Bishop, Phyllis Holmes (Wliakatane), Nancy Patterson, Rita Taylor, Joan Marriner, Semont, Mary Neale, J. and N. Stichbury, G. Dorling, Grace, Betty Jenkins, J. and L, Burnett, Clements, Joyce Ormerod, A. Rich, K. Morton, M. Bottrell, Jean Crawford, L. Campbell, A. Rhodes, M. Kelly, Wheatley, Shaw, G. Aldiss and. Forsyth.

A jolly evening was spent by the members of the Papakura Methodist Bible class at the invitation of Misses Cartwright and Donnell at the Lounge tea rooms on Saturday. The chaperons were Mcsdames R. H. Lever and Cartwright. Dancing and games were indulged up to midnight ancl a dainty supper served. Music was provided by Miss Cartwright and Messrs. Dance and Seaton. There were present: Mesdames Taylor, Johnson, Huckstep and Baulf, Misses Forrest, Baulf, Markwick, Fleming, Evans (2), Huckstep (2), Clarke, Tomlinapn, Gary, Jamieson, Barnes and Horn.
