CUSTOMS RETURNS.

' Customs returns at other main ports of entry in New Zealand as reported by Press Association messages are as follow: — Wellington.—For the ninth successive month the Customs revenue showed an increase over the corresponding month of the previous year. Customs revenue for the first half of this year has amounted to £1,000,841, against £926,021 in the corresponding period last year. Petrol tax this June realised £50,524. against £47,678 in June last year. So far this year petrol tax has yielded £339,562, against £336,678. Tyre tax in June amounted to £1288, against £1614, and for the six months, £6521, against £8881. Beer duty in June amounted to £3871. against £3314, and for the half year, £27,479, against £25,859. Sales tax in June amounted to £55,043, against £45,434 in June last year. Since February 10 last year, when it came into force, the sales tax in Wellington has yielded £753 ; 355. Lyttelton. — Following are Customs returns for June, with the. corresponding figures for June, 1933, in parentheses: Customs, £56,072 ( £59,355); beer duty, £6172 (£6540); motor spirit tax, £14.847 (£14.507); tyre duty, £789 ( £923). The sales tax for the month amounted to £22,780, against £20,275 in June, 1933. Figures for the June quarter are: Customs, £190,292 ( £176,476); beer duty, £20,954 ( £20,549); motor spirit tax, £48,316 ( £49,158); tvre duty, £2698 ( £2645); sales tax, £69,500 (£61,339),

Dunedin.—The Customs returns for the quarter ended to-day are as follow, the figures for the corresponding period of last year being given in parentheses: Customs. £154,976 (£134,763); beer duty, £55,533 ( £46,168); petrol tax, £40,310 ( £38,208); tyre tax, £1870 ( £2261); sales tax, £59,052 (£51,439). The figures for the month ended to-day. compared with those of June last year, are: Customs, £43,495 ( £44,991) ; beer, £16,361 (£13,842); petrol tax, £13.094 ( £10,530); tyre tax. £4SI ( £628); sales tax, £18,266 •( £16,950).
