WINTER RACING.

THE TRENTHAM MEETING.

WHYTE HANDICAP FIELD.

FOIQI OF CANDIDATES

A race that usually creates a good deal of interest at the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting is tho Whyte -Handicap, to bo run on.the first day, and an excellent field has been nominated for the event, though some of them will probably be missing when the acceptances are declared on Monday night.

Curie, who is at the head of the handicap with 10.1. raced most consistently at the Great Northern meeting. He ran second in the Members' Handicap, six furlongs, with 8.11, third in the King George Handicap, seven furlongs, with 9.2, and won' the York Handicap, one mile, on the last day with 9.3. Curie won the Whyte Handicap last year with D.O, and von the Ons-low Handicap, eix furlongs, at the same meeting with 9.11. Ho should again be hard to beat. View j Halloo (10.0) won the Cornwall Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at the Great "NTorthern meeting in good style with 9.0. He was fourth in the York Handicap with 9.10, won by Curie, and now meets that horse on Sib better terms. The minimum in the Whyte Handicap, it may be mentioned, is 7.7, whereas the minimum in each of'the three chief flat events at the Great Northern meeting was 7.0. Royal Hunting. (5.13) has proved himself a great sprinter under big weights, and he would only need to stay on to be very troublesome. He was placed up to seven furlongs at the Wellington winter meeting last year. Rebel Song (8.13) has not raced for some time, but last season he showed his merit by winning the Easter Handicap, seven furlongs, at Riccarton, and running second in the Great Autumn Handicap. Ventrac (8.10) has good form in the south up to a mile and a half, running second to Vintage in the Dunedin Cup, while he also won the Summer Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at the Wellington summer meeting. He raced prominently at the last Dunedin meeting. Sunny Sky and Copper King are on the 8.8. mark. The former showed she ivas returning to form when she ran /second in the Winter Oate, seven furlongs, at Napier Park last Saturday. She is a good mare when at her best, and can handle soft going well. Copper King has raced well during the last few months, running second in the Manchester Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Feilding, and winning the Easter Handicap, one mile and a distance, while he later accounted for the Pahiatua Cup and the Connelly Handicap, both mile and a quarter events, at Pahiatua. Water Power (8.6) has been racing well in the gouth up to ten furlongs, while Slippery (8.5) lias won up to a mile and a quarter, and has plenty of pace. Davolo (8.0) scored over nine furlongs at Amberley recently, and was also placed at Ashburton and Riccarton; Foreign Queen (8.0) lias plenty of speed, and was second over six furlongs to Good Hunting at Otaki, and occupied a similar position to Princess' Doreen over seven furlongs at Foxton. King Musk (8.0) won a division of the Jervois Handicap - , seven furlongs, with 8.11, at Ellerslie, and later ran second to Curie in the York Handicap, one mile, with 7.5. He is meeting Curie on 71b better terms, and View Halloo on 51b worse terms, but lie should again keep them busy. Ida Merling and Prince Colossus have each 7.13. The former won over a mile and a quarter at Marton, while Prince Colossus scored over a similar distance at Te Rapa, but failed in his efforts at the Great Northern, though lie subsequently ran second in a mile and a distance event at Napier Park. Lord Val (7.12) finished third in the Cornwall Handicap with 7.5, but was unplaced in the York Handicap, one mile, with 7.7. He has been working well at Ellerslie since the Great Northern meeting, and as ho has shown a partiality for Trentham previously 'he should show tip. A couple of seasons ago he and Chief Link had two great battles at the Wellington winter meeting. In the Stewards' Handicap, eix furlongs, Chief Link beat him by a nose. The next day they dead-heated in the Members' Handicap, of similar distance, and on the last day Chief Link won a mile event, and Lord Val the Ouslow Handicap, six furlongs. Lady Spy (7.10) showed winning form over a' mile and eight chains at Napier Park last Satur■day, and when in form is good over a middle distance. She was third in this race last year. Gustavo (7.10) lias shown winning form over seven furlongs at Dunedin earlier in the month, while Prince Val, who has a similar weight, scored over a mile and a quarter at Te Awamutu and is right back to his best form. Of the others. Protomint (7.9), Ruri (7.7) and West. Tor (7.7) look the best. Probably some who may be fancied iust now are: Curie, King Musk, View Halloo. Lord Val, Prince Val, Ventrac; Lady Spy and Sunny Sky. .-.■ "■ •
