CARGO RETURNS.
HEAVIER EXPORTS IN MAY.
LESS OVERSEAS IMPORTS.
Cargo return* for the month of May were made available at this afternoon's meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board. Overseas inward cargo showed a decrease, but there wae an increase in all other classes.
Coastal imports totalled :57,004 tons, an inereiise of 18.12 per cent; oversells imports 30,788 tons, a decrease of 38.01 per cent; transhipments 4741 tons, an increase of 70.97 per cent; coastal exports '16,081 tons, an increase of 7.77 per cent; and overseas exports 19,504 tons, an increase of 45.02 per cent. The total cargo handled, 114,208 tons, showed a falling off of 0.17 per cent.
The chief increases in imports were: Wheat (iOO7 tons), cement and lime (1030 tons), sand, *hell and spalls (4457 tons), and general (5465 tone). Decreases wore shown in coal and coke (1540 tons), fruits (052 tons), raw sugar (7911 tons), manures (17,354 tone), and motor spirit (1409 tons).
In exports overseas there were increases in butter and cheese (3558 tons), preserved and frozen meats (1351 tons), wool and skins (703 tons), tallow (o'Jl tone), and general (755 tons).
