ASSAULTED SCHOOLMATES.
"The accused is a decent man, and the trouble was he was under the influence of liquor," said Sub-Inepector Edwards, when Rex Bird, aged 41, a bootmaker, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly, assaulting Andrew Chong, resisting and assaulting Constable Finch, and assaulting, Hilton Charles Hall on Saturday afternoon. Sub-Inepector Edwards said that when under the influence of liquor- Bird had gone to the premises of Chinese in Little Queen Street. Hβ was offered a cup of tea, but instead of appreciating the hospitality shown him, he struck Andrew Chong, and later, when Constable Finch arrived, he resisted arrest and struck the constable, who had to put the handcuffs on him. When placed in a taxi, accused struck the driver, but i in no instance was any eerious injury \ done. j Mr. Dickson, for the accused, said the whole trouble was that Bird had indulged in liquor, to which he was not used. Both Mr. Chong and Constable Finch, were schoolmates of his, ■ and he was a respectable and decent man. Mi". Hunt: Probably this will be a lesson to him.
