GUILTY ON BOTH COUNTS
BAYLY CONVICTED.
MURDER OF HIS NEIGHBOURS.
SENTENCE OF DEATH PASSED.
PRISONER UNMOVED BY VERDICT.
Sentence of death was passed to-day on William Alfred Bayly, the Ruawaro farmer, aged 28, who was found guilty of murdering his neighbours, Samuel Pender Lakey and Christoble Lakey. After hearing a summing-up which lasted just over two hours, the jury retired at 11.16 and returned to the Court at 12.27, having taken an hour and ten minutes to arrive at a verdict. The foreman announced that they had found the prisoner guilty on both counts. Hearing the verdict, Bayly braced himself while the judge assumed the black cap and passed sentence of death. With hands in pockets and shoulders back, the prisoner v swayed gently but was otherwise unmoved. He scorned the assistance of two warders, gave one quick glance round the crowd at the back of the Court, and then hurried down the steps to the cells below. The jury, who had been kept together for five weeks, were thanked by the judge, and exempted from further jury service for seven years.
