CULT OF BEAUTY.

IMPORTANCE OF ACTIVITY. A SUGGESTED DIET. (By A BEAUTY SPECIALIST.) Activity is synonymous with life. You cannot be, alive in every sense without a certain amount of activity. Mental activity is not sufficient. You must use your body in its every part.

Many mental workers will tell you that they have • tried to avoid physical exertion, that tliey want to save all their energy for mental work. But, the poor fools, they have not sense enough to know that the energy extended by the brain comes from the body itself. A body that is thoroughly nourished in its every part has a strong heart and a good stomach, which will naturally nourish the brain far more satisfactorily than where the vital condition is the reverse.

Vital health is essential to a properlynourished brain. A brain cannot bo clear, snappy, vivid and alert unless tho vital organs which supply the nourishment in tho form of blood, arc properly assuming their duty.

There was a time when people believed that tho mind and tho body wcro separate entities. Such foolishness is 110 longer tenable. The mind and tho body act and react upon each other. They depend upon each other. Neither can work without tho aid of the other. Development of Physical Power. The development of physical power tremendously increases one's possibilities in the mental field. One must have energy at the back of one's mental efforts. The stimulation which coincs from unusual health in the attainment of one's object in life is extraordinarily important. There arc many factors that have to do with liealtli-building outside of diet and exercise, but you might saythat these two requirements are absolutely fundamental. Bathing Is also of considerable importance. The body must be kept clean to retain its health. Cold baths have but little value as a cleansing agent, but. there is no doubt of their advantages as a stimulant.

In persons wlio take cold baths daily the physical organisms ultimately acquire a habit of depending upon this stimulating influence to carry on the bodily processes. The common decencies of life demand the bath as a. means of bodily cleanliness. Clothes to a largo extent interfere with the elimination of the waste of the body. The more clothes you wear, the more necessary the daily bath becomes as a means of obtaining vital, vigorous health. A cold bath in the morning, and a hot one at night is a good plan to follow, and hot water and soap furnish a satisfactory means of thoroughly cleansing the body. Bath salts arc very nice, of course, but there is nothing in my opinion to equal lioJiest-to-goodness soaD and water.

Attitude of the Mind Important. One who is' In the habit of continually over-eating would naturally require more bathing than one who is temperate in his eating habits. Over-eating naturally over-loads the eliminating processes, and more impurities are thrown out through the pores under such circumstances. The health-buikling processes are also influenced to a great extent by our mental attitude. As I have just said, the body and mind act and react upon each other. When one's body is vigorous and vital, you will usually retain a satisfactory mental attitude. The attitude of the mind is important. You can bear up or turn down the body through mental influences. You can use your mind in health building as well as in other phases of life. The mind is a tremendous force for good or evil, and the physical body is undoubtedly stimulated by healthful uplifting and strengthening thoughts, just as it is weakened where the mental processes lower the physical status by weakening the will and leaving you dull, dissatisfied, unhappy.

Yeast a Complexion Beautifier.

Here is a suggestion that will bring fresh loveliness to the skin, but, let me add, that this complexion .beantifier is more for the oily than for the dry skin. Wash your* face very carefully with warm water or a good soap, or almond meal. Then pat it gently till it is dry. Make a paste of yeast and warm water, and cover your face with it. Allow this to remain on your face for about an hour. This will draw all the impurities to the surface of your skin. Then wash the paste oil" with warm water, and vour skin will be as clean and smooth as a baby's. A good complexion can be retained for ever, providing an intelligent' interest is continually bestowed upon it. Regular, sensible appetising food, plenty of outdoor exercise, a daily cleansing of the system, helped by drinking cold

water and lemon juice, and eating fruit, means the battle is more than half won. If you have been accustomed to eating rich food, change your diet. No fried things, no heavy meats, plenty of grape juice and orange juice and grapefruit. Honey with your breakfast. Plenty of salads. Never put vinegar in your salad dressing. Lemon juice instead, if you like, but a nice salad can be made out of olive oil, with pepper and salt. Don't eat ice pudding with your meals, and especially escnew iced drinks with your meals.

Eat plenty of vegetables, and if possible, never touch meat at night. Milk puddings, custards, plenty of cream, and stewed fruit—all these are good. Cheese, if you like, and can digest it, is marvellously strengthening.

Try this diet for one month. Eat scientifically for one month. Food makes tho most amazing difference in the colour and texture of the skin. When your one month's trial is ended you will be so surprised at tho change in your personal appearance that, if I am not wrong, you will continue in the right way, until perfect beauty is your reward.

HATS. Thanks be I -The hat styles for the spring are most obligingly varied. There's no hard-and-fast rule about them to worry us. If one has modern chic one chooses a hat that turns off the face or one that reveals the hair all round. If one's style is less extreme there are still dozens of modes that are new yet not difficult to wear. And you can have a squarebrimmed hat if you want to. These are quite an innovation and give a distinctly becoming line. The vogue for up-curved brims will sweep all before it, say the prophets. In some cases they are frankly unbecoming, but in others the skill of the designer has been exercised in the direction of mafcing them a flattering accessory to the frock. In our illustrations the one at the top left is a black picot model, postillion style, trimmed with an ostrich feather tip. Very becoming is the forward tilted Breton sailor in the centre (and all nice girls love a sailor this season). The model on the right is smartly sophisticated and very chic in shiny black coarse straw, the turned-back brim being given a piquant touch with two small cire bows.
