THE SEWING MACHINE

Sewing machines are often rather neglected, but it pays to keep the in in good order and give tliem a thorough overhauling at regular intervals, lirst unscrew and take off the feeder plate. Remove all dirt 'with a small paint brush, then oil every part, including the lar"-o wheel and treadle hinges, with paraffin. Work the machine quickly for a few minutes, then wipe away all dirt and superfluous paraffin and re-oil everywhere with good machine oil. The paraffin clea'ns and the machine oil lubricates. Both oils could be applied with the paint brush' where there are no oil holes. Replace the feeder plate and thread the machine, having carefully tightened all screws. Sew backwards and forwards on a piece of material until the cotton works clean. A sewing machine should be oiled every day when in constant use, and each time it is used when sewing is only occasionally done. Sometimes cotton may get round the large wheel. To remove this, hold a lighted taper under the axle for a few moments. The scorched cotton may then be easily removed with the paint brush.
