CAB FARE, £469 !
In Brighton there is a well-believed legend of a nobleman who, in the 'seventies of last century, in the days of hansom cabs, hired one to drive hiin from London to Brighton pier, told the driver to wait, boarded a yacht, forgot the hansom, went round the world, returned after a year and a half, found the driver still waiting, drove back to London, and paid him his fare £409 7/9. If the story is true, the fare remains the record.
