RATES STRUCK.
WAITEMATA COUNTY. SAME AS LAST YEAR. ITEMS OF EXPENDITURE, Rates for the eleven ridings of the Waitemata County struck at a special meeting of the County Council yesterday are the same ill every case, except in that of the Waipareira riding, where the loan rate ha 6 been raised from M to 3d in the £. The chairman, Mr. W. A. Bishop, said that while rates—with the one exception —had not been increased for the year, it had heen impossible to lower them, for two main reasons. One concerned the large amount of formation work done in the county over the pa.st three years, curtailment of which would not be wise while it could be done so cheaply, and the other concerned the unsatisfactory way in which arrears of rates were being paid. The hospital rate was struck at \d over the whole county, heing unchanged from last vear.
The following items were included in the estimates of expenditure: Wainui riding, maintenance of main highways, £1250, maintenance of minor roads, £300, maintenance and construction of bridges, etc., £1000; Takapnna, £5304. £500, £250; Titiranjri, £204. £(>00; Birkenhead. flS.'jO. £500. £1500: Kaukapakapa, £2740, £000. £3000; Kunien, £2805. £.".00, £1050; Mairetahi. £1202, £300. £2075; Waitcmata, £1801, £500, £1100; Waikumete, £700, £750; Pukeatiia. £2700, £300, £3417; Waiparcira, £700, £000. East Coast Water Supply. The completion of the weir in the area behind Brown's Bay was reported by the county engineer, Mr. L. F. Faram, who said that records would he taken for a period of 12 months at the. enrl of the present month. When these were completed 110 would be able to say whether the water supply from this area would be sufficient for the reticulation of the East Coast bays.
Provided a sum of £200 was paid into (lie Public Account by the County Council, the Public Works Department announced its intention to carry out four miles of metalling and formation 011 the Makarau-Wainui road, and five miles on the Horseshoe Bush Road. The payment was authorised.
Tlio conversion of county loans was considered in committee, the clerk, Mr. 0. A. Cawkwell, to prepare data for the next meeting of the council.
Building permits to the amount 0 £3751 were issued during May.
