OPEN RIFT.
HITLER AND PAPEN.
CRITICISM OF NAZIS.
Offending Speech Sanctioned
By Hindenburg,
CHANCELLOR VERY ANNOYED. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, June 20. The Berlin correspondent of "The Times" states that there was a lively conversation to-day between Herr Hitler and Hcrr von Papon, but it failed to clear the somewhat tense situation created by the latter's speech on Tuesday, in which he criticised the Nazis. It is believed that the conflict is too difficult to settle directly, and consequently Hitler and von I'apen will shortly visit President Ilindenburg in his country home. Ilerr Hitler has not concealed his, strong annoyance at von Pa pen's act, but apparently the latter is not impressed, having deliberately intended to create a stir by criticising what he and others regard as tho shortcomings of the present system. It is understood that Hitler has agreed to some of von Papon's utterances, though he disagreed with tho method of their expression, and the circumstances in which they were enunciated. Action could not be takeii against von Papen because President Ilindenburg saw tho text of his speech beforehand and telegraphed his congratulations afterwards. The full text of von Papon's speech is printed by the publishers of "Germania," tho Roman Catholic paper with which lie is associated, in pamphlet form. In tho course of the address he declared:
"Great men arc not made by propaganda but grow through their deeds. The belief that a nation could be united by terror should be rejected." «
