GOLD SHARES.
Suspension of Quotations on
Sydney Exchange.
SENSATIONAL DEVELOPMENT,
SYDNEY, June 20.
As a climax to the rccent boom in goldmining shares on the Sydney Stock Exchange, a sensation occurred to-day -when the chairman, Mr. F. Steel, at the request of the directors of Tullamore Gold (No Liability) informed members at the first call that it had been decided to suspend quotations of Tullamore shares until Friday. This would give the public an opportunity of considering the position. Transactions after Friday would be for cash only. Mr. Steel further stated that the directors had requested the police to make investigations, which were now going on. A report by the Government geologist, issued by the Mines Department, was read. This disclosed the results of assays taken in the latter part of May and as recently as last week from the Tullamore mines, which are situated 336 miles north-west of Sydney. The gold yields from 34 and 32 samples respectively ranged from about 2dwt to 6 grammes per ton. Tullamore contributing shares recently experienced medium to heavy dealings. Yesterday they fell to 9/6 from 33/6 a month ago. The Mines Department's report refers to the company's annual report of February, and a circular to shareholders, in which it was stated that the company's consulting engineer estimated that the average of all its assays so far taken was 31dwt of gold per ton. Mines Department officials describe this statement as surprising and misleading.
FANATICAL LOVER.
AMERICAN RUNS AMOK,
SAN FRANCISCO, June 14,
A howling mob surged round the gaol in Susanville (California), threatening to lynch Peter Alosi, a woodsman, who has confessed to stabbing five persons to death last week-end. His victims were Joe Fazio, a country grocer, his wife, their grown-up son and daughter, and a woman neighbour. Alosi claims that the- family broke up a romance between him and Sarah Fazio, aged 22. Alosi found Fazio alone in the bathroom, killed him, and then dismembered the body in the bathtub. Mrs. Fazio and her son John arrived on the scene separately, and Alosi quickly dispatched first one and then the other with stabs through the heart. He waited for Sarah to return home, and when she did not do so he went looking for her, and saw her driving in a motor car with a neighbour, Anna Amistini. He stopped them, stunning Mrs. Amistini with a blow. Sarah Fazio jumped out of the car and Alosi chased her for several yards before he got close enough to stab her to death. Hearing another car approaching, Alosi hid in bushes beside the road. The newcomer tried to revive Mrs. Amistini and then went for help, but during his absence Alosi emerged from his hiding place and killed her. "I went back and finished her up," he confessed.
