LOCAL BODIES.
DEVONPORT COUNCIL. The Dcvonport Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr, H. F. W. Meiklc, presiding. Vauxhajl Hall.—Some discussion took place concerning the future of the Vauxhall Hall. Mr. E. Aldridg'e suggested that the hall should be moved to a site where it would prove of greater benefit to the community, but another councillor said he doubted whether the hall would stand moving. It was decided that the matter should be deferred until such time as the proposed deputation from persons interested in the hall had been received.
Ferry Fares.—lt was decided that the Mayor and Messrs. H. J. Hutchings and W. F. M. McLean should wait upon the Devonport Ferry Co. with a view to suggesting reductions in ferry fares on concession, weekly, and season tickets.
Works.—A report of a meeting of the council in committee stated that the foreman of works had pointed out the loss in efficiency due to the age of a number of the older employees, some of whom were not now capable of performing a normal day's work. The pace set by those men, said the foreman, was impairing the efficiency of some of the younger men. It was decided that the foreman should report on (a) Employees who have reached 00 years or ovdi 1 , and (b) Younger employees who are not thoroughly efficient.
Seats for Football.—lt was decided to extend the seating accommodation at the Rugby football ground, councillors expressing the opinion that the seating recently erected as an experiment had proved highly satisfactory.
MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD. The Mount Roskill Road Board met on Tuesday, Mr. C. M. McCullough presiding. Ten Per Cent Cut.—On the advice of the finance committee the board deferred consideration of the 10 per cent cut until its next meeting. Fire Plugs.—The foreman reported that it would cost approximately £800 to alter the 2 1 /£ in fire plugs to 3hi. The board will arrange for the installation of 3in fire , plugs on all the new mains and also where replacements of the existing* 2%in becomes necessary. Arbor Day—The parks and reserves committee will report on a request from the Minister of Internal Affairs that the first Wednesday in August be observed as Arbor Day at Mount Roskill. Inspection of Milk Shops.—The board will obtain the attitude of other local bodies on the question before agreeing to the inspection of milk shops in the districts by the board's inspector.
