FRAUD CHARGE.
U.S. GOVERNOR CONVICTED. NEW YORK, June 18. A message from Bismarck, • North. Dakota, states that the State Governor, William Langer, and four associates, have been convicted of defrauding the United States Government through the solicitation of Federal employees for political contributions. A cablegram dated April 16 stated that, in the most serious charges of graft and corruption within the Federal Civil Works Administration, the State Governor, William Langer, a member of the so-called Non-Partisan League, and eight other party leaders, were indicted in the Federal Court on a charge of forcing administration workers to contribute part of their pay to finance political activities, including the publication of a campaign paper. The indictments charged the men with the violation of two laws by coercing Federal employees into making political contributions and by interference with an Act of Congress. J.t was said that Langer had long used j similar methods with State employees, but there was no complaint until the jjractice spread to Federal workers.
