UNDER WATER.
NORTHERN RAILWAYS. WHAXCAREI EXPRESS HELD UP. Reports from railway officials in Auckland state that there is two feet of "water on • the section of line near Wellsford, and that the 8.40 express from Auckland for Whangarci has been detained at Kaipara Flats, which is 011 the Auckland side of the washout. I Though information is not yet definite from that region, officials say that the line between Wayby and Hoteo, which are both near Wellsford, is under water, but how deep is the water is not known. The last report stated that the water was still rising, but that the rain was easing slightly. What trains have been held up from the northern end is not known, nor is there available any information as to possible damage to the permanent way. Express Held Up At Wellsford. A further report from railway officials states that the express which should have left Whangarei at 11.48 was held back until about 1 p.m., when it was decided to allow it to depart and to work down towards the affected area. Whether it will get through or not is problematical. The position at Wayby and Hoteo was stated to be unchanged. Much would depend on the tide, which was full up there to-day at 3 p.m. The incoming tide was banking up the flood waters, but after high water it was expected that the position would be relieved.
