CUSTOMS RETURNS.
REVENUE INCREASED IN MAY. SALES r fAX ALSO GREATER. Customs duty to the amount of £204,CBG was collected at Auckland last month, tliis being £26,052 more than was collected in May of last year. In the five' months of the year to date the revenue has totalled £1,065,157, an increase of £185,131 over the receipts for the same period of 1933. Both motor spirit and tyre duties returned more last month than they did in May of last year, the receipts from motor spirit being £42,472, as against £38,124, and-from tyres £1540, as against £1364. Excise on beer also returned more 'revemfe, the amount collected from this source last month being £12,339, as against £11,957 in May of last year. Receipts under tTie various headings for-the five-monthly periods of 1934 and 1933 are:— 1934.. 1933. Customs ....... £1,005,157 £880,020 Motor spirit ....• 225,880 202,002 Tyre duties .... . 9,202' 0,754 £1,300,299 £1,059,412 Excise on beer ..- £57,011 £53,747 From sales tax £49,231 was collected last month, making the total for the first five months of. this year £246,545; The return for May shows an increase of £11,074 over that of the same month last year, when the revenue from this source waa £38,157.
