CENTRE RACES. I,ES. DWIGHT FASTEST SENIOR. The A tick In nd Amateur Cycling Centre conducted nn open senior race and an open junior event on Saturday in dull weather. Light showers fell during the progress of the races, hut only a light breeze prevailed, and fast times were made. The junior race of 15 miles was over the concrete highway. The course extended from- Carrington Road to the end of the concrete at Henderson, and buck to the starting point. The turn on the concrete at Henderson proved the downfall of several juniors, who braked too hard on the wet surface. None were hurt. The placed juniors were :— K. F. Clarke (G.O), Auckland Club, •IT.IS 1 L. Denning (5.30), Takapuna, 40.40 .. — TV. Williams (5.30), Lynndate, 40.50 .. 3 ,T, F. Archer (5.30), Manukau, 40.54 .. 4 F. A. Windsor (0.0), Auckland, 47.128 .. 5 Chas. T. D wight, scratch (Manukau Club) was fastest in 45.22, while R. Jones, scratch (Takapuna Club) was next, and G. W. Holland, scratcli (Manukau Club), third, fastest. The senior event, the first race of the season for the club's challenge shield, was over a fairly stiff course of 38 miles from Carrington itoad to Kumeu and back. The metal road from Henderson to Kumeu and back, some 23 miles, was in splendid order, and, except for a short section, free from loose metal. The surfaces were damp, but not wet, and the riders were therefore not troubld by the dust of motorists viewing the race. „ . , , , About two miles from the finish Nicholson after a great effort, caught the leaders and forged Ills way to the head of the line. In the long finishing straight, which was free from pedestrians and spectators owing to the roped barrier, the riders were able to race their hardest unobstructed. Nicholson, Keith Clark and Barry sorted themselves out from the leading line of 19 riders, aud in a great sprint Nicholson won by a wheel, with Harry alongside Clark. Cunningham and Nixon were two lengths back, and the rest (14 riders) went over the line within a few seconds ot the winner. , . On the home run Ees. D wight proved his stamina by leaving White, and finished 2 5S after the winner in easily the best distance race ever handicapped by Mr. J. IX Auekrani, who was the official starter oi tha event. The successful seniors were: — L. M. Nicholson (3.30), Manukau, KT; Clark' (4.0), Manukau, 102.18 .. 2 W Barrv (5.0), Auckland, 103.19 .... o G." H. Cunningham (7.30), Manukau, Nixon" (5.0), Manukau, 103.2 i.. 5 Les. H. Dwight (scr.), Manukau Club, was fastest in 101.10; .Tack W. (1.30), Manukau Club, was second fastest in 101.25. and the winner, Nicholson, was next fastest. . Tlu Manukau Club easily won the fust of the series of contests for the clubs I challenge shield;, which it has won for the past two years.
AUCKLAND CLUB.
The Auckland Cycle Club continued Its series of -Weekly road races at Xauiaki on Saturday in showery weather. Parts of the circuit were heavy after the recent rain The juniors held an eight miles handicap, while the seniors raced oyer a distance of 30 miles, th*«r longest race to date Twenty-five riders competed, the seniors' field being the smallest of the season.
