BANKING STATISTICS. FIGURES FOR MONTH OF MAY. The monthly abstract of banking statistics for May shows a further increase in deposits held on current account, the average amount so held during April (£23,230,744), being the highest figure recorded .in any month since May, 1930. During the past eight months free deposits had increased from approximately £18,000,000 to £23,000,000, while in the same period the .ratio of free to fixed deposits had improved materially. Advances fell by £100,000 to £41,253,837. Although other banking statistics showed a marked improvement as compared with last year, the downward trend in advances still continued; and with the increase in deposits —both free and fixed —the rati6 of advances to deposits had fallen to the exceptionally low figure of 03.82 per cent.
