CORNER FOR BUSY BEES
FOR TWO-YEAR-OLDS. A ••RABBITY" JUMPER. (Conducted by TINKERBELL.) Dear Girls,— If you have a little sister just at the toddling stage you must certainly make her this dear wee jumper. It is quite simple and the little crossstitch rabbit worked on the front will thrill her I know. First of all these are the materials you will need:—3oz of 4-ply standard knitting yarn, a pair of No. 9 knitting needles, a pair of No. 12 steel needles, and four small pearl buttons. Measurements: Length from shoulder, 13 inches; width all round under the arms, 22 inches; length of sleeve (including cuff), 7 inches. Tension: 13 stitches to Z inches in width, and 16 rows to 2 inches in depth, measured after pressing.
Begin at the bottom of the front. Cast on 74 stitcbes on No. 9 needles and knit one row plain, working into
the back of the stitches instead of the front to produce a firm edge. Then continue to knit 1 and purl 1 ribbing for 12 rows, after which continue in stocking stitch (which is knit 1 row, purl 1 row alternately) until the work measures 12 inches from the t beginning, then repeat the knit 1 and purl 1 ribbing for 6 rows, finishing on the wrong side of work. Next row: Knit 1 and purl 1 alternately for 16 stitches, cast off 42 in the pattern for the neck, and knit 1 and purl 1 alternately on remaining 16 stitches. Next row i Knit 1 and purl 1 alternately for 16 stitches, cast on 42 for the back neck, knit 1 and purl 1 alternately for 16 stitches. Now repeat 6 rows of knit 1 and purl 1 ribbing, working into the back of the cast-on stitches. Now work down the back in stocking stitch until there are as many rows down the back as on the front. Then repeat the ribbing for 11 rows and cast off in the pattern on the next row. Begin the sleeve at the cuff. Cast on 44 switches on the No. 12 needles and work in a knit 1 and purl 1 ribbing for 2J inches. Change to No, 9
needles and continue in stocking stitch, increasing at each end of needle (by knitting twice into the stitch before the edge stitch, first into the front and then into the back before slipping off needle) on every 10th row until there are 48 stitches. The sleeve should now measure five inches above the • cuff. If it does not continue in stocking stitch for a few more rows. Make another sleeve in exactly the same manner. Press the work on the right side under a damp cloth with a hot iron. Sew up side seams of juniper, leaving an opening of about eight inches at the top for sleeves. Sew up seams of sleeves and stitch them in, putting seam to seam. Sew two small buttons at each side of front shoulders and make buttonhole loops on back shoulders to match. Work the cross-stitch rabbit on the front of jumper in a contrasting shade of wool. You will find this quite easy to work if you consult the chart. Each cross is worked over one stitch of knitting, and the eye is filled in with a French knot made of black wool. Work a few running stitches in green thread along the bottom of the rabbit to indicate grass. Press the rabbit on the wrong side.
