KING GEORGE'S BIRTHDAY,

RACING CARNIVAL OPENS.

_ The winter racing carnival at Ellerslic, which coincides with the King's Birthday, is always a popular holiday event. Though the 60th anniversary of His Majesty'* birthday fails to-morrow, it is being observed on Monday, and consequently business bouses closed today nntil Tuesday.

The running of'the first of the Great Northerns, the hurdle race, was a big attraction at Ellerslie to-day, and there was a large public attendance. The meeting will Tie continued on Monday, when the spectacular Great Northern Steeplechase is the star item of the day.

To celebrate the King's Birthday, the warships at the naval base, with the exception of the Dunedin, which, is in dock, will dress ship to-morrow. Masthead flags will be flown by all the ships from noon on Monday, when the Royal Salute of twenty-one guns will be fired. There will be the customary ceremonial parade in the Domain on Monday, and the territorial, naval and other units will be reviewed by the Governor : General at 10 a.m.

In the various branches of sport special programmes have been arranged for Monday. There will be a representative Soccer match between Auckland and the Navy at Blandford Park, a League contest /between City and Devonport at Carlaw Park, and a seven-a-side hockey tournament at Kemuera. Motor cycle races are hilled for Henning's, speedway, Mangere, and open golf tournaments will he held at the Glendowie, Akarana and North Shore links.

The picture houses, theatre and cabarets offer attraction for the evening, and, in addition, a hoxing tournament will be staged at the Town Hall.
