OYSTERS AND BUSINESS.
I went down to the Government depot yesterday afternoon to obtain a supply of the first "rocks" of the season, only to find on the door of the depot the notice "Hours, 9 to 4." This method of restricting supply to those who can find it convenient to purchase within these hours is decidedly unfair to the ordinary working individual, the Government has a monopoly of our local oysters, undertakes to retail them at none too reasonable a price, and then for its shop adopts "Civil Service hours." If it is impossible for the Marine Department in its present accommodation to keep more suitable hours for selling its jealously-guarded shellfish, then surely it should have sufficient business instinct to provide, in Queen Street, or adjacent to it, some shop where workers could make purchases at Departmental prices. The present methods savour very strongly of ekss favouritism. SUCCULENT BIVALVE.
