CITY COUNCIL.
I*AST NIGHT'S DECISIONS.
The City Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, presiding.
Loan Authority.—A resolution passed at a special meeting on May 3, resolving to borrow £146,700 by way of special loan to be known as the Waterworks Extension and Improvement Loan (£150,000) Redemption Loan, 1934, was confirmed. Mortuary and Chapel.—lt was decided to contribute £147 towards the cost of renovations, repairs and painting and maintenance of the mortuary and chapel at the hospital.
' Oil Painting Presented. —On the recommendation of the Library Committee _ a donation in the form of an oil painting by John Weeks, entitled "Interior," was accepted from the Auckland Society of Arts.
Compassionate Allowance. —A compassionate allowance of £25 was made to the widow of an employee of the waterworks department who had served the council for 15 years.
Wireless Petition.—The New Zealand No More War Movement wrote expressing the hope that the _ council was _in favour of removing restrictions hindering the fullest use of wireless in respect to the vital problems of the day. The council was asked to pass a resolution supporting a petition to Parliament in.support of educative wireless broadcasts. The Mayor said there must be some limit to the questions upon which the council expressed its opinion. On his motion it was decided to take no action.
Waterfront Road.—ln view of the urgency of the work necessary to make the cliffs overhanging the waterfront road eafe it was decided to accept the offer of the Public Works Department to contribute £500 towards the cost, and the city engineer was instructed to proceed with the work at once.
Orakei Suburb. —An application from residents of Orakei asking, the council to provide a recreation area and suggesting two possible sites was considered, and it was decided to reply that the council
would not be able to develop the recreation area this year. A reouest for the .planting of trees was referred to tae Parks Committee with power to act. Road Improvement.— Improvements to roads in the Orakei subdivision, was requested in a letter from residents, who Isked that the roads be made reasonably safe for the travelling public. The engineer reported that the roads were reasonably safe, and to carry out the improvements suggested would cost more than one quart!? of the whole vote for the Tamaki district. During the. current financial year maintenance attention would be given to the roads. It was decided to reply in terms of the engineer e report.
