TRAGIC SAPPHIRE. Amazing Chain of Mishaps to Hindu Owners. STONE PASSES TO PARSEE. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 10.30 a.m.) CALCUTTA, May 20. A chain of mishaps among well-to-do Hindu residents of Naghpur is ascribed- to the evil influence of a beautiful sapphire. The. sapphire was given to a Naghpur merchant who, within three , days, lost business orders worth several thousand rupees and was involved in a car accident.

He gave the stone to a lawyer who, within 12 hours was knocked down by a car. It was then given to another lawyer, whose wife died suddenly. The sapphire was left in the custody of a cook who was severely burned when the kitchen caught fire. Two hours later it was again given away, and the recipient was thrown from a motor cycle while taking it home. The sapphire is now in possession of a Parsee woman, and it is believed that the evil influence has been broken now it is not -in the hands of a Hindu.

Woman Missionary Doctor Done To Death. N.W. FRONTIER TRAGEDY. (Received 10.30 a.m.) CALCUTTA, May 20. An outrage was committed in a Danish mission hospital at Gujargalo, Mardan, on the North-West frontier. A native named Mahmud ran amok with a knife and murdered Miss Fredrike Doj, a missionary doctor, and Mr. John Martin. The 11-year-old son of Dr. Christenson was seriously wounded. Two nurses escaped to the surrounding hills.

INDIAN CONGRESS.

DISOBEDIENCE MOVEMENT. CALCUTTA, May 20. The committee of the Indian National Congress at a meeting at Patna passed a resolution endorsing Gandhi's statement embodying his decision to reserve civil disobedience to himself and withdrawing it from others. An amendment urging the total abandonment of the disobedience movement was withdrawn.
