S.A. OFFICER DEAD.
COMMANDANT A. W. SAWYER. By the death of Commandant A. W. Sawyer 611 Saturday, the Salvation Army has lost a most capable officer. He had been ill for some time, but was thought to be improving, and his sudden death in a convalescent home was unexpected.
Commandant Sawyer entered the army work in 1910 from Gisborne, and was trained in Melbourne. He returned to New Zealand at the end of that year, and had given the whole of his service in the Dominion. He has commanded corps at Devonport, Newmarket, Onehunga, Eden, Waimate, Temuka, Geraldine, Hawera, Tapanui, Nelson, Stratford, Reefton, Whangarei, Christehurch, Westport, Dunedin, Riverton, Eltham, Masterton, Marton, Hastings, Timaru, Greymouth, and was at Avondale when his health failed.
He has a brother who is an officer in the army, and a sister in the training home at . Wellington. ' His mother lives at Gisborne. He leaves a wife and five children.
The funeral was conducted by Colonel F. Burton, of Wellington, at Hillsboro' Cemetery this afternoon, and this evening a memorial service will be held in the Congress Hall, Grey Avenue.
