VALUELESS CHEQUES.

PROBATION FOR FARMER.

Lawrence Edward Dwyer, a fainier near Dargaville, appeared in the Police Court to-<]av on three charges of obtaining sums of £2 and 30/ by means of valueless cheques on August 31 and October 14 last. Mr. A. M. Goulding appeared for accused, who denied all three charges. After* evidence had been given concerning the cashing of the cheques, Mr. Goulding submitted that it was a case of a genuine mistake. Dwyer had been granted an overdraft at his bank previously, and when he issued the three cheques he thought that the overdraft was still in force. It was a case which might well be dismissed. Tho magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in convicting Dwyer, mentioned that he had previously been in trouble in connection with a cheque. Dwyer was admitted to probation for 12 months and ordered to make restitution, and to pay the costs and expenses of the case, a total of £15.
