LONG JOURNEY.
MAN WITH BROKEN LEG. BROUGHT FROM GREAT BARRIER. Travelling "by sledge, dinghy and fishing launch, Mr. William Grant, aged 21, a Maori, who had broken his leg in the bush near Motairehe, on Great. Barrier Island, yesterday afternoon, was'brouglit to Auckland for medical attention, arriving here at 6-30 this morning in the fishing launch Roa. He was met by a St. John Ambulance and was taken to the Auckland Hospital. While hauling firewood out of the bush, Mr. Grant was overrun by the loaded sledge and suffered a compound fracture of his left leg. Neighbours attended to thq injury as best they could, and the fishing launch having been sighted off the coast of the island, they decided to ask the skipper, to bring the injured man to Auckland. They conveyed him by sledge to the beach, placed him in a dinghy and set out to look for the fishing boat, which they expected would anchor in one of the sheltered bays for the night. After fruitlessly visiting one bay, they found the Roa late last night further along the coast, and the injured man was transferred to her. The Roa left immediately for Auckland at her best speed and took only eight hours for the journey.
