AT THE MARTS.
APPLES VERY CHEAP. BEST HEN EGGS DEARER. A shipment of bananas and oranges arrived from the Islands by the Aorangi. Apples are in very heavy supply, being practically a glut on the market. Many lines had to be quitted at prices which must inean a heavy loss to the grower. Pears are only in fair demand. Good quality tomatoes are meeting with fair yiquiry. Values for grapes eased toward the end of last week, but supplies of out-door-grown Albany Surprise arc now falling off, as the season is nearly over. Fruit. Quotations for average lines are as follow, ia few choice lots realising higher prices:— Apples: Jonathan, 2/6 to 4/ per case; Ballarat, 3/ to 4/; Dclicious, 1/6 to 2/6; Cox's Orange, 3/ to 5/; cookcrs, 1/6 to 2/6; windfalls, 1/ to 1/6. Pears: Louis Bon, 4/ to 6/6; Beurre Diel, 2/ to 2/6; Packham, Clairgeau and E. Bartlett, 2/ to 3/6; windfalls, 1/6 to 2/. Passions: 2/ to 3/. Figs: 2/ to 3/. Oranges: Jamaican, 27/ to 36/6; California!! navels, 35/.
Lemons: Cured, picked counts, 11/ to 14/; others, 4/ to 9/. Tomatoes: Outdoor, choice smooth, 3/ to 4/6; others, 1/6 to 3/. Bananas: 11/ to 16/, according to count. Persimmons: 2/ to 3/3. Tree tomatoes: 5/ to 6/; small, 3/ to 3/6. Cape gooseberries: 3d to 3'Ad per lb. Quinces: 8/ to 10/ per case. Pines: Queensland, 10/ to 12/. Grapes: Te Kauwhata, 4/ to 6/9; hothouse, choice, 1/ to 1/4 per lb; others, 6d to lOd per lb. Coconuts: 14/ per sack. Vegetables. Red Warren pumpkins are still being sent to the marts. Crown pumpkins are plentiful, but really good quality are scarcer, as many appear to have been gathered before being thoroughly ripened. Supplies of cabbage and lettuce continue heavy. Large quantities of kumaras are being sent in. Celery is not in much demand, owing to the comparatively warm weather. Potatoes are in heavy supply, Southern-grown being now on this market.
Quotations are: — Potatoes, 2/9 to 3/6 per bag; swedes, 1/ to 2/9; onions, 2/- to 3/; pieklers, 2/6; kumaras, 2/ to 3/3; cabbages, 1/ to 3/9 per sack; on benches, 9d to 1/6 per dozen; Cauliflowers, 3/ to 4/6 per sack; on benches, 2/ to 3/ per dozen; pumpkins, 2/ to 6/ per cwt; cucumbers, 1/ to 3/ per dozen; carrots, 3d to 6d; parsnips, 6d to 9d; beet, 3d to sd; turnips, 3d to sd; 'radish, 3d; spring onions, 4d to 8d per bundle; spinach, 3d to 6d per dozen; leeks, 2d to sd; green peas, 2/ to 4/9 per bag; French beans, l/_ to 3/; marrows, 6d to 1/ per dozen; citron melons, 3d to 7d each; water melons, Id to 6d; lettuce, 9d to 3/ per case; celery, cooking, 4d to 8d per bundle; dessert, 1/ to 1/S; rhubarb, 1/ to 2/ per dozen. Butter and Eggs. A further rise of one penny per dozen has been made in the price of first grade hen eggs. Other grades of hen eggs, also duck, are unaltered. Quotations are: — First grade hen eggs, 1/11% per dozen; B grade, 1/6%; C grade, 1/3%. First grade duck eggs, 1/8% per dozen; B grade, 1/6%; C grade, 1/5%. Farmers' butter, 6d to 8d per lb. Poultry.
At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry ivas heavy and the demand was very fair. The prices paid remain unaltered. Selling rates were as follow:— Cockerels: Heavy breeds, prime, 2/ to 3/6 each; not prime, 9d up; light breeds, prime, 1/ to 2/; not prime, 9d up. Fat roosters: Heavy breeds, prime, 1/6 to 2/; light breeds, 1/3 to 1/6. Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 1/9 to 2/6; light breads, 1/ to 1/6. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 3/ to 5/6; smaller, 1/6 up; light breeds, best, 3/6 to 6/; smaller, 1/6 up. Drakes: Young, prime, 1/9 to 2/6: smaller, 1/ up; old, 1/3 to 1/9. Ducks: Young, 2/ to 3/; old, 1/6 to 1/9.
