LOCAL BODIES.

ONEHUNGA. A meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, presiding. Basin Reserve. — The Agricultural Department has examined two samples of mud from the Basin Reserve and has informed the council that it will be two years before grass will "take" on it. The foreman is to lay out one ground on the portion of the reserve selected by the council. The council decided to offer a purse of £25 for the best sc'ieme for laying out the Basin Reserve as a sports area, competitive plans are to be invited for a general layout. The acceptance of any design will not necessarily imply the right to supervise the work. Drainage Storm water. —The foreman's estimate of the cost of draining the stormwater in the Angle Street area was £152, if the council supplied the labour, or £72 if relief labour was utilised. He gave a further estimate of £122 provided the council received a subsidy of two-thirds wages from the Unemployment Board. The property owners who will benefit by the scheme are to be asked to contribute £61, half the east.

Sustenance. — The difficulty regarding sustenance payments and other matters in Onehunga is being investigated by the Unemployment Board. In a letter conveying this information to the council the commissioner added that the new sustenance scheme in Wellington and Auckland was as yet only experimental. Tenders. —The tender ot' McCarten Bros, for a further 12 months' lease of Section 44 at £7 10/ per annum was accepted, also Mr. Richards' tender of 2/ per week for a small portion of Mount Reserve. FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL. The regular monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council was held at Pukekohe yesterday, Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P., being chairman.

Accounts. — Accounts amounting to £3013 17/8 were passed for payment.

Engineer's Report.—The engineer, Mr. J. F. McArthur, reported that proposals have recently been submitted to the Public Works Department for the expenditure of a subsidy of £500 on the basis of £500 to £150. The proposals submitted provide for the surfacing with shingle of two sections of the Koheroa Road. 120 chains at the Maungatawhiri end and 120 chains at the Mercer end. It was hoped that the necessary monetary authority would be issued at an early date, as it was intended to complete a portion, if not all, of the surfacing before the coming winter. Mr. ,T. N. Massey stated that he dispatched a telegram to the Minister of Public Works asking for the necessary authority to be issued.

Unemployed Labour. — The engineer reported that 165 men are working from relief camps, and that a further 116 men are required to fill the camps. The total number of men working under relief within the county is 305.
