TE AROHA GOSSIP.
KING MESTOR WELL HORSES REFUSE TO TRAVEL. The absence of Record Flight and Engi from the Ohinemuri meeting on Thursday was accounted for by the lact that they both absolutely refused to make the trip in a horse float. The firstnamed, who had been having au easy time since being affected with a cold contracted after the Matamata fixture, ran a good lace on Saturday, considering he must have been short of a couple of gallops. If Record Flight goes on satisfactorily in his work his next appearance with be at Avondale next month.
It is understood that Mr. W. H. Maria contemplates making a holiday trip to the other side. If so his horses Alloy and British Columbia will bo left in Te Aroha for a few weeks, probably in charge of one of the local trainers. This will be decided upon during the week. Mr. G. P. Goodfellow's Val Watch made good in the Handicap Hurdles at Paeroa, and her win was fully expected by both her owner and trainer. Some credit is due to her rider, R. E. Thompson, for when he first began to school the Valkyrian mare it was by no means certain that she was a safe conveyance. It is satisfactory to her connections that although placed on the "schooling list she lias proved a winner. The victory of Royal Secret in the Waihi Handicap was very popular here. Since winning at Matamata the King Lu filly had been allotted steady work, with the result that she has thickened out nicely, and stayed out the seven furlongs solidly. On breeding lines she may go on to further victories, as her dam, Elope, is by Chrysolous, a sire of gallopers of note. Mungatoon did not make an appearance at Paeroa, having been somewhat sore after a final gallop on the previous Tuesday. At the finish of a sharp sprint he wrenched off a shoe, a portion of the hoof being torn away. As he had then to walk a distance of four miles to his stable the soreness may have resulted therefrom. He has now practically recovered, and will be again 6een in public in the near future.
Te Aroha horses for the Tauranga meeting are King Mestor, Don't Lap and Royal Secret. The firstnamed is standing up to his racing really well, and may be depended upon to race prominently. Royal Secret is none the worse for her efforts at Paeroa, while Don't Lap, in the little jumping he has been asked to do, has performed proficiently. He will probably be raced on the flat 011 the pecond day.
The locally-owned Raceful mare lias been taken out of work for the meantime. The little grey showed pace in short sprints, but appeared to lack staying ability. It is quite likely she may be given another chance of making good next season.
