"BLACK HAND" RACKET
Italians on Queensland Cane Fields. REVELATIONS IN COURT. BRISBANE, March 20. The existence of a "Black Hand Society among the Italian community on the sugar cane fields in Northern Queensland was revealed in the course of the trial of Giuseppe Buiti and Giuseppe Parisi, on charges of wounding Giovanni lacona with intent to disfigure him. lacona has been committed for trial on a charge of having murdered a fellow-countryman, Kicola Mammone, at Innisfail. He is permanently disfigured, having lost both his cars.
In the course of his evidence lacona said he had received several letters signed "The Black Hand," ,in which money was demanded from him. The demands were accompanied by menaces of violence if they were not complied with. He produced letters in which some of his friends were threatened with the loss of their sugar cane crops by fire if ho failed to influence them to send money by a messenger specially nominated.
