CYCLE TRACK.

GREAT SOUTH ROAD PROBLEM MOUNT WELLINGTON ATTITUDE. Exception whs taken by members of the Mount Wellington Road Board last evening to a statement reported to have been made by Mr. A. Sinclair at a recent meeting of the Otahulm Borough Council to the effect that the Mount Wellington Koad Board was not interested in the formation of a cycle track on the Great South Koad and that their indifference should not hold up any attempt to abolish what was a positive death trap.

It was pointed out that the Otahulm Borough Council had never approached the Mount Wellington Road board in the matter, but had forwarded a suggestion to the Automobile Association early in December last that step* be taken to endeavour to arrange for a cycle track to be constructed on the most dangerous part of the Great South Koad. The Mount Wellington Koad Board was subsequently asked by the Automobile Association if it would be agreeable to ft conference being held between the local bodies interested in the matter, and it was resolved to attend a conference to be convened by the association. On January 24 last tiie Automobile Association advised that it had followed up the proposal. but there did not appear to be any prospect of arranging for the proposed construction to be undertaken and it had been decided not to take any further action in the matter. It was felt that the Otahulm Borough Council should make representations to the Koad Board, when a conference could be arranged between the two bodies to discuss the proposal, as questions of very great difficulty, both legal .and financial, were involved. Only part of the suggested cycle track route was within tlie Mount Wellington road district, the remainder bcin<r under the control of One Tree Hill Borough Council, so that any scheme that did not include the latter portion would be of little benefit. It was resolved to obtain legal advice from the board's solicitors as the legality of a cycle track, the powers to confine cyclists thereto and its protection from use by vehicles and cattle.
