BREAKS EVENS FOR FURLONG. ( METCALFE IS BELOW FOItM. (By. Telegraph Press Association.) BLENHEIM, Wednesday. The outstanding performance of the Australian athletes* appearance at an evening sports meeting to-day was Hampson's 220 yards, in which he bettered the Now Zealand record time by half a second, covering the distance in 21 3-10s. His previous best time was 21 T-lOs. However, it is doubtful if a record can be claimed, as the runner was assisted hy a. steady breeze over the first half of. the journey. Hampson also ran an excellent 100 yards In 10s, which is l-5s over the New Zealand record and 3-10s slower than his last race. He won both races comfortably. Metcalfe was affected by the cold weather, but won the high jump at 6ft Jin. In th.e_ long jump Metcalfe did 21ft 4in, which is much below his best performance. He put the shot 38ft Tin. • Barwick had an easy win over M. Cooke, the Wellington champion in the mile, although the time, 4.32 2-5, was not equal to his best.
