MANUKAU CLUB'S MEETING. BYRNES TWICE VICTORIOUS. JACK VALDER IN GREAT FORM. Last evening an enthusiastic gathering enjoyed a really thrilling evening of close wheel-to-wheel finishes when the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club conducted its "champion of champions" meeting at I the concrete banked .track at the Western Springs Stadium. The chief event was the tandem-paced mile, in which the winner, SI. P. Byrnes, equalled the Dominion record time for the mile of 2.2 3-5, and incidentally the record he is the holder of. In this race the three placed riders crossed the line almost abreast. Byrnes gaining the decision by inches from Lew. Dwiglit, with Gordon Patrick finishing along the cinder track. The last race of the evening, the five-1 miler, went the crowd away thoroughly I satisfied, for there was never a (lull moment throughout the full 17 laps. Thirteen riders got away to a rolling start, and the big four, the two Dwiglit brothers, Gordon Patrick and Alal Byrnes, dominated the event right from the commencement. Los. Dwiglit gained six lap prizes, Henry Dwiglit three, and Gordon Patrick three, while Roy Taylor, Jack Clark and L. M. Nicholson led on the other laps. The pace was so fast during the earlier portion of the event that only six riders were left with three laps to go. When the boll lap commenced the "big four" were with the lead. Around the back they were practically abreast when the pace was clapped on. Byrnes made his lightning dash off the home banking, and simply flew up the finishing straight to win by over a length from Henry Dwiglit, Gordon Patrick and Jack W. Clark. The time was two seconds better than that of the championship fivemiler, which Henry Dwiglit won the previous week.

Ihe most conspicuous rider in the handicap races was Chas. Clarke, who was making the meeting his last track one after competing consistently over a period of nine years. He won his heat of the mile, but was unfortunate to be brought down in the final when a novice rider, unfamiliar with the track, crossed abruptly in front of him. In the three miler, in spite of bandaged arms and leg. lie rode a great race, and went out fast on the final lap to win by two clear lengths in 0.32. the second fastest tlireemilor ridden on the track. The scratch man. Norm. F. Cooper, and •Tack Valder, 25yds. were closely watched in the one-mile run. Valder (who had competed earlier at Papatoetoe) ran well to hold off Conner, and finish second to P. Ohms in 4.32. Results were: — CYCLING. Tandem-paced One-mile Scratch Racc. — M. I».
