FARMERS' TRADING CARNIVAL
OFFICE RETAINS THE CUP. WALLACE AND JEAN THOMSON SHINE. There were 53 events on the programme at last night's annual swimming carnival of the Farmers' Trading Company, Ltd., for the Chamberlain Cup. There was an excellent, attendance of over 500, and the crowd retained its interest right to the end of a long evening's entertainment.
Office, which won the championship last year, retained it, scoring 4S points to 37 by Queen Street, and 21 by Hardware.
The best swimmer was Gilbert Wallace, the young Birkenhead-Northcote performer, who made fast time in several races. There were some keen contests between Jean Thomson (the former 'Varsity girl) and Judith Webster (X.Z. breaststroke champion), but as the latter has no pretensions to free style swimming, although she raced exceedingly well, Miss Thomson was the victor. The national champion could not successfully concede two seconds to her opponent in the breaststroke, but this was not surprising, as the Parncll girl was a former Dominion champion at the stroke, and the distance of one lap only was too short for Miss Webster. A splendid exhibition of diving was given by tlie Auckland lady champion, Miss Irene Long, and two teams from the Pon son by Swimming Club played an exhibition gaire of water polo. Officials. The same night the club will hold a flannel dance in the Point Erin Kiosk, in the nature of a novelty evening. WAS IT A RECORD ? B. PENE'S TIME AT HAMILTON". The third heat of the 100 yards open handicap at the Y.M.C.A. swimming sports at Hamilton on Saturday night was won by B. Pene from Noel Crump. Commenting upon this, the "Waikato Times" of Monday said: ,"The best performance of the evening was registered by B. Pene, of the Rotorua Club. When forced solidly by Noel Crump, the Auckland and Dominion champion, he clipped three-fifths of a second off the 100 yards South Auckland record of 59 2-ss, previously held by W. Whareaitu, also of the Rotorua Club." In the detailed results, however, Pene is shown as having had seven seconds start from Crump (scratch). Therefore, the time given. 58 4-ss, must really have been Crump's, because:— (1) If Pene could have swum the distance in 58 4-ss, why did he have such a big handicap? (2) Crump would have had to swim inside' 51 4-5s to have beaten him, and 51s is the world's record. ' . Pene's time was probably round about 65 4-ss. because tlie _ time of R. Shaw (Hamilton Old Boys) in winning the final' was shown at 68s, and he had four seconds start from Pene. The latter," therefore, could not break 645, or he would have beaten Shaw, whereas the Maori was unplaced.
