MOTHERS' UNION
The first council meeting of the Auckland Mothers' Union for 1934 was held on Monday afternoon in Bisliopscourt Library. There was a full attendance of members of the council, presided over by Mrs. Averill. The meeting was addressed by his Grace the Archbishop, who spoke on the call to renewal. He urged on the members of the Mothers' Union the necessity of the individual renewal in each life—a renewal of devotion to the highest good for all under the leadership of the Mothers' Union. The thanksgiving service for the Call to Renewal is to be held at the Cathedral Church on June 5 at 2 o'clock. It was arranged that, as in former years, a wreath was to be placed on the Cenotaph on Anzac Day by two delegates from the Mothers' Union. A supply of large pictures to bo used with lectures for instruction in Sunday schools and at other meetings, had been sent from headquarters and would be used in outlying districts as well as in towns. The announcement in the Pre>s of the passing of a measure through the House of Lords by Lord Dawson, the King's physician, for the rendering illegal of sales of contraceptives to unmarried young people was referred to, and it was decided that the Mothers' Union should use its influence to get a similar measure brought forward for New Zealand. A letter on the subject from Mrs. West Watson, Dominion president, was read and the necessity for action being taken in the matter was acknowledged and deplored. At the close of the meeting tea was handed round.
