The quaint old Sussex town of Eye is built upon a rocky eminence, which centuries ago was washed oil all sides by the influx of the tide. The sea has gradually <leserted it, and now the town lico two miles inland. Little is known of its early history. From Henry 111. itreceived the full rights and privileges or a Cinque Port under the title of Ancient Town." The French sacked and burned Kye three times in the 14th century, and in consequence it was fortified by oiuei c£ Ijidward 111.
