MINER'S ESCAPE.
EXPLOSION AT WAIHI. CAUGHT CN A LADDER. DESPERATE CLIMB TO SAFETY. (Py Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. CFngiiig desperately to a ladder way in a winze, though seriously injured by the explosion of several charges of gelignite at the bottom of the winze, Mr. Wm. Glasgo'.v, mining contractor, a married man with a large family, residing in Seddon Avenue, narrowly escaped losing his life yesterday afternoon in the Wnihi mine. He managed to climb to safety to the level above. - Mr. Glasgow and his mate, Mr. C. F. Thornton, were engaged in sinking a winze on No. 12 level in No. 2 chatt, and Sir. Glasgow had fired the connecting fuses to six charges when the accident occurred. The bottom of the winze is 30 feet from the top. Mr. Thornton had already gained the top of the winze when the charges commenced to explode at short intervals, but Mr. Glasgow was only about Hal? way ti]> the ladders, and bo received the full force of the concussion and flying stone. Notwithstanding his terrible predicament, Mr. Glasgow won through to the level above. His escape from falling to the bottom of the winze on top of the exploiting charge.? i.s regarded as miraculous. After receiving attention in the mine dressing station, lie was conveyed to the Waihi Hospital. Mr. Glasgow's injuries extended from the neck and arms to the buttocks, the lock of the legs and the thighs. General lacerations and wounds were caused bv flying stone, and quite large pieces bad to br? removed. Inquiries made this morning show that the patient is suffering severely from shock, but in view of the nature of his injuries his condition is satisfactory.
