FLOWER EXPERT.
VISITOR FROM CALIFORNIA. CULTIVATION OF NASTURTIUMS. Bringing with him a box of scarlet nasturtiums in flower. Mr. J. C. Bodger, head of a noted American seed growing and exporting firm, arrived in Auckland on a business and pleasure visit by the Monterey this morning. The nursery of Bodger and Company occupies 1500 acres at El Monte, not far from Los Angeles, The cultivation and hybridising of the nasturtium, which lias been a feature of the great gardens, at El Monte, will be of particular interest to the Dominion. From the- double centred Golden Gleam, the parent plant, various colours have bene hybridised, and Mr. Bodger said the double centred red variety was an outstanding novelty of the present season. Acres of nasturtiums were cultivated in his nursery. The plants were of a semi-climbing variety, growing in bushes about 2ft high. In America they were much prized for table decoration. The blending of the colours from the original golden species occupied veal's before the distinctive colours were obtained.
