BOWLING.

CHAMPIONSHIPS INTERRUPTED ItEFKES ENTIN G N.Z. ABROAD. BRITISH VISIT DOUBTFUL. (By TRUNDLER.) A big surprise fell upon the bowling clubs on Saturday, when a brilliant afternoon suddenly changed to heavy rain. This did not matter very much in regard to tho many inter-club matches whiclj had to stop with three or four heads not played, but it seriously interfered with the club championships that were waiting for a few fine Saturdays to clear up the rounds that were held up by those who do not usually attend during the week. In the Sports Edition of last Saturday week there appeared a review of the championship positions in those clubs where the competition was approaching completion. To this may now be added Remuera. In the nest round the only two-lifers, R. G. Norton and J. H. Mingina, will meet, and as they have both had a bye the new bye will go to the winner of Hr. R. J. Short and R. Griffiths, while E. R. Allen will meet the winner of A. D. Newton and S. J. Harbutt. This will reduce the survivors to four, of whom the only two-lifer will be the winner of Norton and Mingins. Competition and committees are reminded that the entries for the annual champion of champions tournament will close on Tuesday, March 13, the tournament itself to commence on the following Tuesday. The president of the Onehunga Bowling Club, Mr. E. J. Gatland, while welcoming the Avondale visitors on Saturday, took the opportunity to congratulate the club's rink, who had just returned from winning the Tauranga annual tournament for the third consecutive year. This was a very fine performance on the part of the three members of the club, S. McMaster,. H. A. Robertson and F. Livingstone, who were again assisted by J. T. Banks (Matamata), and the record was all the more creditable from the fact that on the first occasion they had taken Rotorua "in their stride," on the way to Tauranga. He specially congratulated the veteran lead on standing up to such a strenuous week. As a matter of fact Mr. McMaster is already over SO, so he should be quite a good player if he keeps on for another five or ten years of steady tournament play, under the able generalship of his illustroue son-in-law.

After two postponements caused by wet weather, the committee have decided upon next Thursday afternoon to make a third try for the annsal match of the Auckland veteran bowlers. The game will be played on the Auckland green, commencing as soon as the draw is completed from the names handed in before 1.30. Open tournaments this week are at Balmoral and Manurewa on Tuesday, Avondale, Ponsonby and Pukekohe on Wednesday, Rawhiti on Thursday. There has not been a very heavy response to' the .invitation for the names of those who'would like to join the proposed touring party to Taranaki next week. A meeting of the centre executive will be held this evening at the secretary's office, when the advisability of making the proposed trip will be discussed, as it is riot customary to make up an-official party unless it is reasonably strong.,lf any of those who have nominated could persuade some of their friends to join in, the situation could still be saved by telephoning the additional names to Mr. Gladding during the evening. Telephone 41-645. Entries for the "open pairs?' tournament, to commence on Tuesday, March 6, will close next Monday. All bowlers will be pleased to know that Mr. J. S. Kilgour (Carlton) has sufficiently from hiß long and serious illness toagaintake~'his place at the endof the' rank. <j> At a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Bowling Council, held in Dunedin last Monday, it was decided to appoint Mr. J. W. Beanland as "first" representative on the Dominion on the International Bowling Board, and he has signified his willingness to attend the annual meeting of that body in July. At the half-yearly meeting of the council, held during the Dominion tournament in Dunedin last month, Mr. Ivor B. Thomas was again appointed "second" representative, and authority was given to the executive to make the usual appointment of the "first" representative, who must be a resi3ent of New Zealand. Mr. Beanland is a member *of the Edgeware Bowling Club, Christchurch, and is a member of the Chrlstchurch City Council, on which body he has already served several terras. He does not appear to have ever competed in Auckland, but he played No. 2 for W. Efford in Dunedin last month, and No. 3 for the same skipi in Wellington last year, when they qualified with six wins, and survived until the fifth round, being defeated by the Carlton rink (Gladding, Pascoe, Truacott, •Jenkin). He also played No. 3 for C. W. Johnston when the tournament was held in his own city the previous year. A former resident of Christchurch authorises the statement that in his opinion Mr. Beanland is a sound debater, well informed on bowling matters, and emin-ently-suitable'to represent the Dominion in the Old Country. The previous representatives have been the late Mr. J. W. Hardley (West End), Mr. James Pascoe (Devonport), Mr. Marcus Marks (Wellington), Mr. L. G. P. Spencer (Takapuna) and Mr.'W. C. E.-George (Huntly), so the Bdgeware Club has the honour of claiming the first representative from the South Island.

Mr. W. E. Arey (Carlton) writes from Sydney with great regret that he has heard that the proposed visit of the British bowlers to Australia and New Zealand has been cancelled, although it is only a. month aince Mr. James Wall had shown him the proposed itinerary. Probably even now, however, the position is much the Kame as when Mr. Arey's original information appeared in this column on January 22, when this proviso was added: "Naturally there is nothing really definite yet in regard to the British visits except that it is the intention of the International Bowling Board to arrange the trip, and that is always contingent on a sufficient number volunteering to join the party." When the original advices left England, the Old Country was just beginning one of the worst winters that Britain has ever endured, and their bowlers may have a very different opinion in July, when Mr. Beanland tells them how they can avoid a repetition of incessant fogs and snowstorms by spending their own winter in the eummer annehine of Australia and New Zealand. Furthermore, nobody can yet tell how the recently-arranged visit of Prince George to the Melbourne centenary celebrations may alter their attitude. _ CLUB GAMES. EDBNDALE GREEN.
