FLYING FORGER.
SAVINGS BANK DEFRAUDED. LONDON, February 9. Smartly dressed, a signwriter named Derek Grey, 29, pleaded guilty at Exeter to nine charges of having forged and uttered post office savings bank books and obtained money thereby. Grey admitted 124 similar offences. Astonishing methods were revealed. After opening an account he wrote in. additional entries of deposits, and then obtained withdrawals, altering the dates of these. Within a few days after liis earlier imprisonment he made fraudulent withdrawals at London, Folkestone, Tunbridge Wells, and Exeter. Thence he entrained for Bristol and taxied round the city, obtaining withdrawals at five post offices. Fearing suspicion, he then chartered an aeroplane and flew to Cardiff, Worcester, and Birmingham. By then liis description had been circulated throughout the country, and lie was traced to a railway station. Police awaited him at Euston terminus, but he left the train at Coventry, and lay low for a while. Then lij operated again at Torquay, Paignton, and Plymouth, where detectives recognised and arrested him in the street. He was sentenced to one year and nine months' imprisonment with hard, labour.
