SEAMEN'S WELFARE.

WORK OF MISSIONS. LONDON SECRETARY'S VISIT, LUNCHEON IN WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In honour of the visit of Mr. Stuart S. Knox, general secretary of the Mission to Seamen's Society in London, tlie Hon. Alexander Shaw, chairman of the P. and 0. Company, and Lady Margaret Shaw, gave a luncheon to leaders of

shipping and others interested in the work of Missions to Seamen in Wellington. Mr. Shaw said that Mr. Knox's organisation had been largely instrumental in maintaining good relationship between seamen and employers by bringing about a realisation of the other fellow's point of view. It was also true that the seamen for whom the organisation worked were still the most important missionaries of the Empire. He added that among those present at the luncheon was a lady who had handed him as a donation a cheque for £100, and who wished to remain anonymous. He would hand this to Mr. Knox as an earnest of the work he had started in Wellington. Mr. Knox, in replying, paid a tribute to ladies who had helped the mission here and elsewhere by self-sacrificing kindness and consideration for those men who were without homes and friends and who visited the ports of the world in the interests of trade and Empire.
