POACHING EVIL.

" AMAZING DECISION." OPOSSUM SKINS RETURNED. MINISTER CRITICISED. (By Telegraph.—Priss Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Extreme concern was expressed and there was much plain speaking by members of the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society in reference to the decision of the Minister of Internal i Affairs, the Hon. J. A. Young, to return confiscated opossum skins to a broker, who had obtained them from poachers, who were later convicted and fined £10 each by a magistrate. It was the unanimous opinion of the ! council that the Minister's action constituted a "serious blow to the endeavour which acclimatisation societies were making to stamp out the poaching evil." Endeavours to have the decision altered had been of no avail, members stated, and the . Minister stated that no good purpose would be served by meeting a deputation from the council. "This j.s the most amazing decision made by any Minister in New Zealand," declared the chairman, Dr. G. F. V. Anson. "Practically all the good we have done is lost. I can only think that it is a decision of ignorance." Motions that the question be referred to the associated societies and that the facts be put before the Prime Minister were carried.
