NEW FARM METHODS.
LESSON OF THE DEPRESSION. MINISTERS SUGGESTION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DANNEVTRKE, Wednesday. Speaking at the Dannevirke Agricultural and Pastoral Association's jubilee show to-day the Minister of Lands, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, said, having regard to the fact that it was nearly impossible for stock to be imported into the Dominion owing to the foot and mouth disease regulations, why should not New Zealand export stud' stock? When stock was healthy, surely they could develop an export trade in it. He believed this was attainable with proper organisation. There was sometimes a failure on the part of exporters to. realise the requirements of importers overseas. To succeed- in the business it was necessary to stock goods required by customers. So it was with their primary products. They had to produce articl#"; the customers overseas required. These requirements should be rjet ana' the variety of
exports increased. New Zealand could produce many things besides wool, cheese and meat. He believed there were great possibilities in markets other than Great Britain. The Minister said he strongly held the view that the Dominion was insufficiently represented in the Homeland, on the Continent and in the United' States. It was imperative that buyers who wanted New Zealand goods should get them and nothing else. As Minister of Lands one thing had impressed him particularly. This was the fact that where the best stock was produced and where the farmers were most prosperous was where the holdings were small. He believed that in future greater progress would be made in the Dominion°by restricting areas rather than by extending them. He advocated more intensive farming, rotational grazing, pasture management and top-dressing. He believed the depression was a blessing in disguise and that complacency was a thing of the past. The recent experience would teach them a lesson that they had to look for new methods and systems, and soon.
