BRAVERY RECOGNISED.
FERRY EMPLOYEE'S RESCUES. Recognition of the bravery of Mr. Leslie Martin, of the staff of the Devonport Ferry Company, who has the remarkable record of 13 rescues from drowning to his credit will be made this evening when the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, will present to him a certificate from the Royal Humane Society. Mr. Martin has rescued 12 people in the Auckland harbour and one from the dangerous surf at Kerikeri. His last rescue was effected some months ago when a boy of eight years fell off the Northcote ferry boat in the vicinity of Prince's wharf. The ferry had reached its berthing place some 300 yards from the scene of the accident before the alarm was given by a woman who saw the lad's serious plight. Mr. Martin, fully clothed, jumped into the water and swam back to the boy, who was by that time in great difficulties, and took him to safety.' This last feat, together with the other 12 rescues, has led the Royal Humane Society to award a certificate to Mr. Martin and the presentation will take place this evening in the Town Hall at seven o'clock.
