Windermere, one of the English lakes, has the distinction of being the longest and widest, and, with the exception of Wastwater, the deepest of the lakes in the Lake District. Its length is a fraction under 11 miles, its greatest breadth a mile and a third, and its greatest depth 240 ft. Numerous islands, varying in size, give variety to its surface.
